Neighborhood Story Banner Project

The Neighborhood Story Banner

Neighborhood Story Banner Project

DECEMBER 13, 2021, 7:00 PM was the virtual unveiling of The Neighborhood Story Banner Project. This project was funded through a Stockton Rush Bartol Foundation Teaching Artist Micro-Grant. The generous grant supports the project now through 2022.

The Neighborhood Story Banner Project documents the hyperlocal histories of neighborhoods as they change and in some cases disappear completely. Information banners will be exhibited in several neighborhoods across the city.  Artwork, written text, and twenty images will be displayed on each banner.  The images represent a story from the City of Brotherly Love.   In addition, there will be posters distributed in each community that provide an opportunity for residents to draw, write, or create an image that they feel captures the essence of their community OR a person, place, or thing that once existed in Philadelphia.

Last but not least, short YouTube videos will be posted featuring several individuals who share stories about their experiences growing up, living, or working in Philadelphia. (Go to Upcoming Events to see a video or our Youtube Chanel) https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC3jU1edo_pXlhhBljcls31g

The Thing About Philly will be back Summer 2022! Read about the series kick-off.

The Thing About Philly 9.25.21

The Thing About Philly-Flippy the Clown skit South Philly’s Aquarama story.

This storytelling series share forgotten or under-told stories of Philadelphia history, particularly focusing on neighborhoods where City resources haven’t gone into preserving and documenting it well.

This hybrid project combines storytelling, a history lecture, and reader’s theater with a touch of humor.  Active “re-tellings” is what this show is all about courtesy of skits, visuals, and expressive readings. Each show focuses on a true person, place, event, or thing that existed somewhere in Philadelphia, or its surroundings, sometime in the past. For example, did you know that from 1962 to 1969 there was an Aquarium in South Philly called Aquarama Aquarium Theater of the Sea?   Who knew? Apparently, some Philadelphians born prior to 1960. But the history is not well known. Each show produces a lively and “mostly” accurate dramatization of the subject matter.

The Thing About Philly Episode #1 Focused on West Philadelphia’s Foo-Foos “Home of the Mamma Jama” steak shop, and South Philadelphia’s Aquarama: Aquarium of the Seas.

Date: Saturday, September 25, 2021 https://youtu.be/JTfbKYw89PM

Each show typically runs 1 hour.

Every projects is an opportunity to learn.
